I Dream Of Honey

Wild. Sweet. Glistening. Decadent. Superfood. Nectar Goddess. Just a few words that come to mind when I dream of honey. But not just any honey, honey! I’m talking about real, raw organic honey, honeycomb, royal jelly, bee pollen and raw manuka honey…the good stuff. So what’s the “bEEg” deal about raw honey and why should you incorporate it into your diet and skincare? Here are my top 8 favorite honey products and why I just can’t get enough…   Royal Jelly If you were stranded on an island, this would be an essential goodie to have. Extremely potent, royal jelly is said to be the #1 longevity food in the world. While all bees start out genetically the same, only one bee is selected to feed on royal jelly and that is the Queen Bee. While the worker bees that eat only honey and pollen live for about 6 weeks, the Queen Bee lives for approximately 6 years! Benefits: -Boosts the immune system -Helps to balance hormones -Promotes wound healing -Antitumor/anticancer properties -Lowers cholesterol levels -Increases fat metabolism -Powerful antioxidant -Regulates blood sugar levels -Supports collagen to protect you against the sun’s harmful rays + premature aging -B complex, amino acids, calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc How to eat it: take ¼ tsp of the jelly first thing in the morning on an empty stomach as the nutrients are best absorbed this way.   Raw Organic Honey Raw organic honey really needs no introduction. Just those two words are enough to make most salivate. What sets raw honey apart from regular honey is in the way it’s processed. Raw honey isn’t heated to high temperatures (pasteurization), filtered or strained which in turn keeps its powerful nutrients and enzymes locked in. Benefits: -Fights fat by boosting metabolism -Antioxidant properties fights off free radicals in your body which keeps your immune system strong -Antibiotic properties -Cleans blood vessels -Helps alleviate respiratory problems -Aids in digestion -Gives an instant energy boost -Natural cure for cuts + burns -Contains all of the main essential amino acids -Loaded with energizing B vitamins -Immune boosting vitamin + vitamins D + E Tip: Check out your local farmers markets for local raw honey. Almost all raw honey farms will have samples of different flavors to try like orange blossom and lavender sage.   Raw Organic Honeycomb The purest raw honey comes straight from the honeycomb. It’s often referred to as “nature’s perfect package” and comes directly from the hive. Benefits: -Chewing the honeycomb helps to relieve seasonal allergy symptoms -Helps to heal gastric problems -Complete protein Tip: go for local honeycomb when possible. This helps your immune system to combat seasonal allergies best. I also recommend eating small pieces of the honeycomb with honey for the best flavor.   Raw Organic Manuka Honey Raw Manuka Honey is like raw honey’s cousin from New Zealand. It’s harvested exclusively from bees that gather nectar in areas populated with the Manuka tree (which grows in New Zealand). This tree is actually a Tea Tree, which is why Manuka honey is known to be extremely antibacterial to the skin. Benefits: -Helps to balance the bacterial load on the skin + helps to clear it out -Heals wounds on skins as well as ulcers -Healing to the digestive track Cool fact: Scarlett Johansson swears by using Manuka honey as a mask. She suggests using it right after you get out of the shower and while your pores are open to just take a spoonful and apply the honey directly to your face. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse with warm water. Tip: It’s expensive (at around $30 to $40 dollars per jar). Look for the number on the jar that tells you the antibacterial factor. It usually starts at 6 and goes up to 22. The higher the number, the more antibacterial properties it has. Also it tends to works best on dry, irritated or inflamed skin. If you have oily skin, go for raw organic honey.   Bee Pollen Bee Pollen is considered one of nature’s most completely nourishing foods as it contains almost all of the nutrients required by humans. It’s also more potent in proteins than any animal source. It contains more amino acids than beef, eggs, or cheese of equal weight. Benefits: -Boosts energy with B-complex vitamins. Olympic athletes have been known to take it in order to boost their stamina and endurance. -Immune system booster -Libido enhancer -Natural aphrodisiac -Enzymes help to aide digestion that helps you to absorb more nutrients from your food -Helps to treat allergies -May help prevent the onset of asthma -Contains about 40% complete protein -Helps to curb cravings, which helps with weight loss Tip: When purchasing, only look for fresh organic bee pollen. I like to add ½ - 1 tsp to my green smoothies OR mix with a little coconut oil for a fast afternoon snack/energy boost.   Bee Yummy Skin Care Thanks to the gorgeous ladies at Sakara Life, I recently discovered the fountain of youth: Bee Yummy skin care from live-live.
