Understanding Your Chakra System: The Crown
Within each of us lies a subtle energy system, through which our energy flows and expands, allowing us to shine from the inside out. Widely referred to as our Chakra System, this invisible yet wildly powerful network runs from the base of your spine to the crown of your head. And within this system are seven individual energy centers, known as your chakras. Each chakra is associated with certain parts of the body, as well as specific mental and spiritual components, to which it feeds energy. When balanced and nourished, our chakras open, allowing energy to flow in and out effortlessly, extending this vitality and abundance to all pillars of life. Our lifestyle, habits, diet, thoughts, words, emotions, relationships, and life experiences all profoundly affect our chakras. It is so important to our health, wealth, and happiness that we become aware of this energy system and how our own actions affect it. And so, we present to you the S-Life Understanding Your Chakra System series. Over the next seven weeks, we will introduce a different chakra (working our way up the body), and what you can do to elevate and sustain your unique and divine energy in each area.
Our seventh and final chakra rests at the crown of our head, referred to quite appropriately as our Crown Chakra or Sahasrara in Sanskrit. Beginning at the deeply grounding + earth-centered root chakra, our energy ascends up the chakra system until it eventually reaches the divine and other-worldly crown. It is here that we are able to experience connection to the Divine (however you prefer to define that) and the Universal energy that surrounds us. The seventh chakra transcends our intellect, allowing us to rest in a place of trust, joy, inspiration, and peace. From here, we tap into a sense of knowing there is a deeper meaning to life, trusting the often-times confusing yet divine order that pervades every moment of our lives.
The challenge and gift presented to us by the crown chakra is to move beyond the limits of our ego — that inner voice that not-so-nicely likes to tell us we are not enough, that life is scary, and to keep our guard up at all costs. Nourishing our connection to the crown chakra allows us to transcend these self-imposed and totally false limitations of the mind, and from this space of trust and peace, we begin to realize the deep interconnectedness between ourselves and the world around us. At a fundamental level, we are all so much more the same than we are different. Sometimes all it takes is a little shift in perspective and crown chakra activation to realize this universal truth.
If this all seems a little bit “out there”, that’s because it is. The crown chakra is often referred to as the meeting place between the seen and the unseen, the finite and infinite. On an intellectual level, it doesn’t make a lot of sense, but chances are, there’s a place deep within you that can grasp the idea. And the most beautiful part is that when we realize + accept that everything is interconnected and that we are part of the larger scheme of life, we begin to live with gratitude, faith and trust, rather than with fear and anxiety.
When out of balance, you may experience: headaches and migraines, fear, anxiety, isolation/loneliness, inability to connect with others, spiritual disconnection, thyroid and pineal gland disorders, insomnia, and depression.
When properly balanced, you will feel: deeply connected to others, spiritually content, trusting, grateful, at ease, and guided through life.
So how do we go about nourishing, supporting, and balancing this deeply divine and sacred energy system?
Find what inspires you, and do it — a lot. This chakra thrives on an inspired mind and spirit. Sometimes all it takes is a little daily visualization or contemplation about a particularly inspiring event or time. By regularly engaging your spirit and taking time to fuel your passions, the crown chakra will begin to reveal it’s beautiful and mysterious gifts.
As we’ve now learned, this chakra is much less concerned with earthly elements than its predecessors, so when it comes to balancing the crown chakra it’s less about what you eat and more about what you don’t. Too many earthly indulgences (aka food and alcohol) will leave this chakra feeling dull and unstimulated. Instead, focus on drinking lots of liquids: think alkaline spring water, herbal teas, and bone broth. And to further strengthen the crown, consider a light detox. No need to give up food entirely (by now you should know we are so not about restriction), but perhaps incorporate more nourishing juices and liquids alongside lighter meals one day a week.
