How To Eat Healthy For Healthy Sex Organs

Hopefully, you know by now that your lady parts need and deserve tender loving care. One major way to show your reproductive organs some TLC? With food!

Whether you know it or not, your vagina is home to a whole ecosystem of friendly microbes that are super sensitive to intruders and imbalances. And anything that throws off the delicate production of lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide can cause a problem called bacterial vaginosis.

You may not even be aware that this condition has occurred and is causing major chaos down south; after all, half of all women with bacterial vaginosis don’t experience any symptoms, and according to microbiologist Gregor Reid, around 30% of American women currently have BV.

But just because you’re symptom-free doesn’t mean you’re in the clear. Imbalanced vaginal flora can actually compromise your ability to get and stay pregnant. According to Reid, the resulting low-level inflammation from BV is linked to the prevention of fertilization of the egg, spontaneous miscarriage, a higher risk of preterm birth, and it can even make women more susceptible to acquiring and transmitting STDs and HIV.

But before you call the doctor demanding medication, know this: antibiotics are not always the answer. In fact, they could be making things worse. That’s because they destroy your gut flora balance and throw off your body’s natural ability to keep bacteria and yeast balanced. You’re not meant to nor can you ever actually get rid of yeast or bacteria – you have pounds of it living in you and on your skin – you need to feed the good bacteria so they keep the nasty ones in check!

So what can you do instead to prevent and combat BV and other vaginal ailments? Fix your gut.

How Your Gut Impacts Your Vaginal Health

What does your gut have to do with your lady parts? A lot. The friendly bacteria or “gut flora” that make up your microbiome are largely responsible for regulating your hormones, especially your estrogen levels. When you have a poorly functioning microbiome that leads to estrogen-dominance, you’re more likely to develop one or many imbalances or illnesses, including infertility, PMS, low libido, cramps and heavy bleeding, and PCOS. Plus, a dysfunctional microbiome and subsequent estrogen imbalance can even make you more susceptible to estrogen-led cancers like breast cancer.

There are approximately five pounds of bacteria living inside of you and in a lot of ways, your health is dependent on their health. A poor internal ecosystem caused by the wrong food choices, too much stress, and exposure to chemicals will suppress the good bacteria, promote the bad bacteria, and will lead to a toxic buildup of hormones and systemic inflammation.

According to research, addressing the microbiome holistically is the only way to get your immune system, digestive system, and endocrine system working smoothly.

How the PIll Hurts Your Vaginal Health Too

Besides a poor diet, being on the Pill or taking antibiotics can squash the good bacteria and encourage the bad guys to multiply. The Pill acts like an antibiotic in the gut, destroying the microbiome balance. Recent research has linked Pill use to an increased risk of Crohn’s disease among people with a family history of the condition — a symptomatic disease of imbalance in the microbiome. I don’t consider the Pill an effective treatment for hormonal imbalance issues anyway, and now we know for certain it will make your hormonal issues worse.

How to Eat For a Healthier Vagina

Know this: bacteria and yeast can’t survive in a healthy internal ecosystem that’s maintained with a diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods. If you eat the right foods, take supplements as needed, avoid chemical-laden products, develop hormonally supportive habits, and only sparingly use unnecessary medications, then you are on your way to a healthier gut and a balanced vaginal ecosystem.

You can absolutely support good gut bacteria with the right foods and supplements. You’ve probably heard of probiotics: these are the good guys you want in your gut bacteria. Start taking ,a good supplement from a well-established company like Jarrow; I like their Stable-Dophilus formula because it doesn’t need refrigeration. Also start incorporating more fermented foods, which are rich in probiotics like kimchi and sauerkraut; just a few tablespoons a day will work wonders.

Prebiotics are important too. This is what feeds the probiotics. You need to keep the good bacteria happy and well-fed if you want them to proliferate. Leafy greens, sunchokes, and root veggies are all great prebiotic-rich foods to incorporate into your diet.

And if you do still wind up with an unpleasant situation in your lady parts, take heart: there are natural remedies that can get you feeling better fast:

  • For BV, try taking liquid chlorophyll taken internally to alkalize the body or Jarrow Femdophilous, which has been clinically shown to restore the vaginal microbiome.
  • For a yeast infection, try the Jarrow supplement or Vitanica Yeast Arrest Vaginal Suppositories.
  • For UTIs, D-mannose or baking soda in water will help balance your pH. The Jarrow supplement is great for this too, and I also love homeopathic remedies. Consult a homeopath for the right remedies.

Lastly, while it’s not a food-specific rec, one must-do to keep your vagina healthy: switch your lube! Always use a natural non-synthetic option (no liquid plastic in your pussy, please!) and always use condoms. This will keep your bacteria in balance and your lady parts happy.

Lastly, audit your period.  Knowing what type of period you have based on the color of your bleed will also give insight into the hormones that are affecting overall immune health.  Take the Period Type™Quiz and discover your type along with actionable steps to recover your balance.
