HeyDay's Top 5 Tips For Ultimate Summer Skin

1. Embrace the Double Cleanse

While we try not to think about the daily summer sludge that slowly builds-up on our skin throughout the day, we do look forward to getting home, turning on that A/C, and relieving our face with double cleanse.  Begin with an oil cleanser, which you apply to dry skin first, emulsify with water on your fingertips, and then rinse away the day. Next, apply your usual cleanser (gel cleaners are great this time of the year) to give your pores a deeper clean. This routine will help prevent those dreaded summer breakouts and you won’t bring the outside grime into bed with you.

 

2. Continue to Moisturize

Despite the warm and occasionally muggy weather, it’s still important to moisturize everyday, because you’re taking your skin on a temperature roller coaster. Your skin will be going back-and-forth from the hot, dry sun to the icy cold air-conditioned rooms, and you know what dry skin produces? More oil! Therefore, we suggest you continue your daily moisturizing routine with a lightweight option.

 

3. SPF All Day, Every Day (Literally)  

When we say reapply your SPF, we don’t just mean at the beach! We like to apply every 2-3 hours with broad spectrum sunscreen (meaning that you’re protected from both UVA and UVB rays). Remember the forgetful spots that still get sun, like neck, knees, hands, and ears, and perhaps change your regular matte to an SPF tinted moisturizer to lighten up the makeup load (that is likely to melt off nowadays anyway).

 

4. Keep Cleansing Wipes and a Mist in Your Bag

 Aside from a travel-size SPF, we like to keep cleansing wipes a cooling mist in our summer tote, whether we’re on the way to the beach or grabbing lunch in between meetings. Cleansing wipes are a great way to freshen up throughout the day, and can help you get those subtle spots that are prone to summer breakouts, like your hairline and under the bra straps. A hydrating mist can be cooling and refreshing. Some of our favorites, including Herbivore Botanicals After Sun Spray, have aloe that can bring relief after a sun-filled day.

 

5. Avoid that Razor Burn

 We end up shaving quite a bit more in the summer (it’s not just us, right?) which means a lot more opportunity for your legs to dry out. We like to leave our shaving cream on our legs for a full 60 seconds before shaving, as it provides an easy shave with less burn. When you’re finished shaving, rinse with cold water to avoid irritation, and once dry, apply moisturizer (bonus points for a luxurious sunscreen oil like the one we love from Supergoop!).
