This Week In Health News

Every week, The S-Life Mag will make sure you’re in the know about the latest scientific studies and current events pertaining to health, wellness, nutrition and more. This is the stuff you need to know for your body, mind and soul!

TOP STORY!

  • Donald Trump campaigned hard on replacing the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare), but until now, Americans had no idea what he planned to replace it with. Well, at long last, House Republicans have unveiled their health care proposal. Notably, the new law would get rid of the individual mandate, which required people to get health insurance or face a tax penalty. It would also make changes to Medicaid and distribute premium subsidies based on age instead of income. However, Republicans aren’t scrapping the ACA in its entirety; their proposal keeps the clause that allows dependent coverage until age 26 and the much-talked-about pre-existing conditions policy, which prevents insurance companies from discriminating against people based on their health history.

MORE GOOD STUFF…

  • The Mediterranean diet, which includes plenty of fresh fruits, veggies, whole grains, nuts and olive oil (sound familiar?), is widely touted as one of the healthiest ways to eat, and yet another study has proven its disease-fighting benefits. Specifically, it found that the diet cuts breast cancer risk by 40%.

  • Soy is often vilified for potentially raising cancer risk due to the plant-based estrogens it contains. But new research suggests the opposite; in a study, soy was not found to worsen breast cancer. In fact, it might actually have the power to prevent the disease.

  • A really good SoulCycle class is supposed to hurt a little bit…but not like this. A woman is suing the boutique fitness chain after she was injured while dismounting her bike.

  • Last week, the World Health Organization warned about the increasing threat of drug-resistant bacteria. Among those dangerous bugs is E. coli, the leading cause of urinary tract infections. Not to give you nightmares or anything, but experts warn that without new antibiotics, UTIs—which affect millions of women every year—could go from unpleasant to life-threatening.

  • It’s no secret that enticing marketing plays a major role in getting us hooked on unhealthy food. One Cambridge University neuroscientist thinks that if junk food was sold in plain packaging, it would encourage people to eat healthier.

  • For cancer patients suffering from fatigue, either related to their illness or their treatment, exercise and psychotherapy may be more effective than medications, according to new research.

  • Experts warn that we could see a surge of cases of Lyme disease in 2017.
