This Week In Health News

Every week, The S-Life Mag will make sure you’re in the know about the latest scientific studies and current events pertaining to health, wellness, nutrition and more. This is the stuff you need to know for your body, mind and soul!

TOP STORY!

  • When you eat whole, plant-based food straight from Mama Earth (or straight from Mama Earth via Sakara Life), you get copious macronutrient, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. When you eat packaged food and restaurant meals, you get…lots and lots of salt. A study found that only 5% of people’s dietary salt intake comes from home-cooked meals, meaning most of it comes from processed junk food and eating out. Take our advice and stick close to the source!

MORE GOOD STUFF…

  • Food IS medicine, and the Fresh Food Pharmacy takes that very literally. The store, located in Pennsylvania, is part of a pilot program that distributes free healthy food to patients with Type 2 diabetes and teaches them health-conscious habits. The goal of the program is to help reduce patients’ diabetes symptoms, allowing them to take fewer medications and ultimately lowering their health care costs. And it’s working.

  • The FDA has approved the first new drug for ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) in 20 years.

  • A woman who sued Johnson & Johnson after developing ovarian cancer allegedly caused by her prolonged use of baby powder has been awarded over $110 million by a judge in St. Louis. The offending ingredient in baby powder is talc, which the Environmental Working Group classifies as a moderately hazardous substance. This case may encourage brands to be more mindful about the ingredients in their products in the future. The short-term lesson for you? Read your ingredient labels and choose your personal care products wisely.

  • Scientists researching nerve cancer made an accidental discovery that could save you a lot of money at the hair salon: They found a particular type of skin cell that causes age-related gray hair (and balding). The discovery could pave the way for future treatments.

  • The nation’s top medical groups—including the American Medical Association and the American College of Physicians—are not impressed by the GOP’s proposed health care law.

  • The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force has come out against mass screening for thyroid cancer, saying that the testing most often detects cancers that would never become life-threatening tumors, leading to unnecessary treatment.

  • Trouble sleeping? Your age may be to blame. Research suggests physiological changes that naturally occur as you get older could disrupt your nightly rest.

  • As if you needed a reason to choose plant-based, never-frozen, always-fresh Sakara pancakes and waffles over the frozen variety from Aunt Jemima…the brand has issued a recall due to possible listeria contamination.

  • Life expectancy in the U.S. is on the rise, but there’s a caveat—in certain regions, it’s actually dropping, and the disparity is more than 20 years. Unsurprisingly, low income, sedentary habits and limited access to quality heath care are all linked to shorter lifespan.
