This Week In Health News

Every week, The S-Life Mag will make sure you’re in the know about the latest scientific studies and current events pertaining to health, wellness, nutrition and more. This is the stuff you need to know for your body, mind and soul!

TOP STORY!

  • We already know that our environments—including our diets, the medications we take and the household products we use—affect our microbiome, which ultimately controls our health destiny. Now, new research suggests that when infants are exposed to a furry pet like a dog or cat during the first few months of life, they are less likely to be obese and suffer from allergies…because of changes to the makeup of their gut microbiota. The results are especially relevant to babies born via C-section, who miss out on picking up a variety of beneficial bacteria in the mother’s birth canal during delivery.

MORE GOOD STUFF…

  • Watch out, silver foxes! Gray hair in men may indicate an increased risk of heart disease. And in other men’s health news, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force has reversed their recommendation against routine prostate cancer screenings, advising men should decide for themselves whether or not they want to get tested.

  • Official guidelines about mammograms and the recommendations of specific doctors are out of step, according to a study of physicians.

  • A new study suggests celiac disease could be linked to a usually harmless virus that causes the human immune system to overreact to gluten.

  • If you typically stay up late into the night, a genetic mutation may be the cause of your “night owl” routine.

  • Your FitBit does a pretty good job of counting your daily steps, but it turns out you can’t trust its measurement of your heart rate.

  • Down for DIY genetic testing? The FDA has approved the direct-to-consumer sale of “spit kits” from 23andMe. The at-home tests allow people to use their saliva to reveal their risk of certain diseases, including Alzheimer’s.
