Which Meditation App Is Right For You?

Meditation is the answer to everything. It helps you focus better, think more creatively, sleep deeper, and be healthier, happier, and better in bed (sign us up). If you have yet to hop aboard the meditation train, but have found yourself scrolling through pages of meditation apps in the App Store, wondering which one to pick, we’ve got you covered.

Check out our list below to find the best meditation app for you, and enjoy the zen.

For the person who wants their hand held: Headspace

The most widely used, shared, and talked about, Headspace is the perfect app for the person who doesn’t think they can meditate, but wants to try. They ease you in with their ten day program that guides you through ten minutes of noticing, counting, and breathing, with some short animations thrown in here and there to explain various concepts. From there, you choose a program based on your goal (fear of flying, to boost confidence, etc.), and they promise to continue to hold your hand all the way through. Best part is the person who guides you through each minute has the most buttery australian accent you could dream of. You’re guaranteed to feel relaxed at “hello”.

For the person who isn’t ready to commit: Calm

Calm starts off with an introductory course that teaches you about different meditation techniques and then leads you through a practice session for each. From there, you’re on your own - the app will suggest you try a meditation here or there, ranging from two to 20 minutes. But the beauty of Calm is as soon as you open the app you are transported to a little piece of heaven - rain falling in a rainforest, the beach at sunset, a lake nestled in between mountains - with the respective soundtrack, and you can save and use your favorite ones for your future meditations. Less about technique, and more about the setting, Calm focuses on bringing you to a place where you instantly feel….well...calm.

For the person who goes all in: Pacifica

Pacifica works with psychologists to create meditation programs based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques to break the cycle of negative thoughts that often cause stress and anxiety. Pacifica is not a quick fix, but a more comprehensive, long-term program designed for the person who is serious about improving their quality of life. They also have a robust tracking section where you can record your mood, thoughts, and health goals. AND they ask you how you’re feeling everyday, which is nice because who doesn’t want to feel like their meditation app is thinking about them?

For the person who can’t sit still: Buddhify

Buddhify teaches you that meditation doesn’t require you sitting cross legged on the floor with your eyes closed and palo santo burning. You start by selecting an activity - walking, eating, commuting, even being online - and Buddhify teaches you a meditation to weave in. It shows you that meditation is a way of life and that no matter where you are or what you’re doing, you could be meditating (asking for a friend: even while watching the bachelor?). They also have a mixture of voices to choose from - male, female, American, British -, so you can finally find out if you’re more of a Julie Andrews or Morgan Freeman.

For the instant gratification lover: Stop, Breathe & Think

You know when you’re having a meltdown at work or about to cuss someone out on the subway for rudely cutting you off? Stop, breathe, and think is for that version of you that’s about to explode. You select your mood (anxious, sad, angry, etc.), and the app will provide you with a fifteen minute meditation designed to bring you back to your zennest self. Plus they give you cute stickers for completing meditation on consecutive days, and who doesn’t like a little reward for their hard work?

For the competitive freak: Sattva

If competition gets you going, Sattva is for you. Each day you are presented with a challenge to tackle, and a celebratory party for completing. But what really sets Sattva apart is they have a social feed where you can connect with your friends, track their progress, and show off your own. After all, do you know what’s better than become a pro meditator? Becoming one before your friends do.

For the person who’s tried them all: Inscape

Inscape is the new hottie in school that everyone has their eye on. Started by Khajak Keledjian, CEO of Intermix, the Inscape app brings a sexy, sleek vibe to meditation, offering “mantra”, “mindfulness”, and “focus” meditations, in addition to sound baths that you can turn on and totally chill out to. They also provide short, situation-based meditations, like first thing in the morning, mid-day focus boost, and going to sleep. And if you happen to live in NYC, you can take a guided meditation class in their meditation mecca for an even more supported experience (which feels like you’re either in outer space, or in the womb...or both.)
