Cold & Flu Elixir

For this week’s Sunday Table, we’re brewing a powerful cold & flu elixir in preparation for the busy season of holiday travel.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2-inch piece fresh ginger, sliced
  • 1-inch piece fresh turmeric, sliced
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 1 whole star anise
  • A few cracks of black pepper
  • Optional: 2-3 strips orange peel
  • Juice of 1/2 a lemon
  • Honey to taste

DIRECTIONS

  1. To a pot, add ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, cloves, star anise, black pepper, orange peel, and 2-3 cups of water.
  2. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer and simmer for 5 minutes.
  3. Turn off heat and let sit for at least 5 minutes. The longer it steeps the stronger it will be.
  4. While the tea is steeping, add the juice of a half a lemon to a mug. Pour over steeped tea and add honey to taste. Enjoy.
