SAKARA 101
I Tried It: Sakara Fiber Bite
A firsthand review of Sakara Fiber Bite, the prebiotic fiber gummy for digestion, gut health, and daily wellness.
When I began hearing headlines and friends and even family members uttering the phrase “fiber is the new protein,” I had to stop myself before opening my mouth and letting out a long-winded monologue about how nutrition is not a trend, and fruits and vegetables have been important dietary components this entire time. The only thing worse than a nutritional trend reporter is a nutritional know-it-all.
But the truth of the matter is, 95% of Americans fail to meet the daily 25 grams of fiber that’s recommended. It’s a simple stat that’s recited far too often amongst salad-eating women, but it’s, unfortunately, worth repeating. While fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and beans (AKA. the Sakara meal plan) should cover these bases, it’s not as easy to maintain with regularity (sorry!) as it seems. Between travel, busy work days where lunch is reduced to a packaged bar of sorts, and the necessary hangouts with fries and desserts, fiber is often the first dietary component to get the boot for me, personally.
Here is where it’s important for me to mention that I am somewhat of a fiber junkie. I eat a lot, like a lot, of fruits and vegetables. As a former vegetarian, I’m pretty comfortable with a predominantly plant-rich diet. So when it came time to try Sakara’s new Fiber Bite, I thought, well, I’m already good at fiber—do I really need a gummy? In fact, I worried that its 6 grams of clinically proven prebiotic fiber would send me over the edge into a territory of gastrointestinal discomfort that I wasn’t interested in experiencing. However, I’m nothing if not curious, so I decided to embrace the experiment.
With consistency being a huge part of the process here, it would be crucial that I build a habit around taking this gummy (as you can tell, I take my experimentation very seriously). I landed on first thing in the morning as the best time of day—two gummies alongside my daily selenium supplement (Brazil nuts) as a pre-workout ritual. For the first few days, I can’t say much happened, other than the fact that I got to enjoy a ‘healthy candy’ upon waking. No complaints. I went on with my strength training, my breakfast, my daily work routines, with no real changes to report. This is, in my opinion, a good thing. Like I said, I was worried that chewing on a daily fiber bomb would make me bloated and uncomfortable, so their absence was quite a relief
It wasn’t until the first week was over that I noticed something… shifting. This whole time I had been going to the bathroom (you knew this was coming), I wasn’t going to the best of my ability, if you know what I mean. After taking Fiber Bites for a little over a week, my time on the toilet felt a bit easier, more thorough. Again, no cramping, no bloating, no gas, just the sense that everything in my body was in flow.
Now that I've built the habit, the gummies have become as automatic as my Brazil nuts—just another small, consistent thing I do for myself before the day starts. If you already eat well and you're skeptical, I get it. But ‘already pretty good’ turns out to leave more room than I expected. I like to think of the Fiber Bite as a delicious nutritional insurance policy, even for those of us who eat their fair share of veggies.
