Understanding Your Chakra System: The Throat

Within each of us lies a subtle energy system, through which our energy flows and expands, allowing us to shine from the inside out. Widely referred to as our Chakra System, this invisible yet wildly powerful network runs from the base of your spine to the crown of your head. And within this system are seven individual energy centers, known as your chakras. Each chakra is associated with certain parts of the body, as well as specific mental and spiritual components, to which it feeds energy. When balanced and nourished, our chakras open, allowing energy to flow in and out effortlessly, extending this vitality and abundance to all pillars of life. Our lifestyle, habits, diet, thoughts, words, emotions, relationships, and life experiences all profoundly affect our chakras. It is so important to our health, wealth, and happiness that we become aware of this energy system and how our own actions affect it. And so, we present to you the S-Life Understanding Your Chakra System series. Over the next seven weeks, we will introduce a different chakra (working our way up the body), and what you can do to elevate and sustain your unique and divine energy in each area.

Our fifth chakra, also referred to as the Throat Chakra, is located at the center of your throat and vibrates at the color blue. Not surprisingly, this energy center is all about speaking your truth and living authentically. The throat chakra houses your voice (both literally and metaphorically) and serves as your center of communication. The ability to speak your truth, to unapologetically express your needs, desires, and heartfelt opinions, is directly related to the health and balance of this energy center.

The throat chakra is considered to be the voice of the body. It is our deepest source of self expression. From this space, we experience the confidence and self-assurance to effectively and openly communicate our opinions, emotions, and needs. A blockage in this area may result from or contribute to an inability to speak your truth. Is there something that you need to express, but for whatever reason feel unable to? Perhaps you’re afraid that this truth will be met with resistance at the receiving end. There are so many ways that we stifle our inner voices; mindlessly chasing goals set for us by others, surrounding ourselves with people that don’t reflect (or respect) our values, and denying ourselves the freedom to look, dress, and act how we want. We have been conditioned by society (especially as women) to act and speak a certain way, and this can leave so many of us feeling disconnected with our true selves and inner voices.

Physically, the throat chakra governs the neck, mouth, tongue, thyroid, parathyroid, and larynx. Chronic and long-term conditions in these areas may indicate an imbalance in the fifth chakra.

When out of balance, you may experience: sore throats, headaches, neck pain, thyroid conditions, dental issues, fear of speaking, shyness, inability to effectively express thoughts or emotions, social anxiety, habitual lying, fear or doubts about others’ intentions, and feelings of being misunderstood.

When properly balanced, you will feel and experience: expressive, outgoing, confidence when speaking, authentic, open communication with others, the ability to listen to others, and a healthy thyroid.

So how do we go about balancing, nourishing, and supporting this sacred and empowering energy system?

The first step in reclaiming and reconnecting with your inner voice is to turn your attention inward and get REAL about who you are and what you want. What makes you feel vibrantly alive? When and where are you at your happiest? What do you need (on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level) to live fully and well? And conversely, get truthful about who and what drains your energy. A little introspection and self-exploration goes a long way in strengthening the throat chakra. Consider this as the foundation from which you will speak and act from. And the next step? Start talking. Speak straight from the heart, knowing that if you never ask, the answer will always be no.

This chakra loves liquids: think mineral water, herbal tea, kombucha, coconut water, and cold-pressed juices. Proper hydration enhances clear, truthful communication from this energy source, helping to clear out stuck energy. Eating fruit also brings balance to the throat chakra. In particular, look for fruits that grow on trees, such as apples, pears, plums, peaches, apricots, and citrus fruits. Fruits that grow on trees are said to be ‘true to themselves’, falling off the tree when they are ripe and ready — a lesson in authenticity that does not go unnoticed by the chakra system.
