Letters To The Foods We Love
There are the foods we love. The foods we hate. And the foods we hate to love. In honor of Valentine's Day, we asked members of Sakara HQ to write love, lust, break up, and make up letters to the foods they have the most hot and heavy relationships with.
Olivia M.'s Hot And Heavy Love For Soup
What began as a steamy fling over 25 years ago has evolved into a hot and heavy relationship that always keeps me wonton more.
You drew me in with your intense warmth and I'm addicted to your fiery depth.
Soup, I want you. I want you all.of.the.time. I want you in the kitchen and on the couch. I want you in my bed. I even want you on top of the dining room table. I want you to hold me when I'm chili and never let me gazpacho.
I want to wake up with you in Vietnam and fall asleep with you in France. I dream of our Italian Wedding: to have you and to hold you. In sickness and in health.
Happy Valentines Day soup - you make miso incredibly happy. Thank you pho always being my little spoon.
Gabby's Proclamation For Oreos
Our relationship started one late night in college when I caught word of the fact that you are technically vegan. No animal products in your dreamy, milky center, layered between your crunchy cookie outsides? You felt too good to be true. Yet there you were, my after-dinner treat whenever I wanted you, whenever I needed you. And no matter how many times my friends told me and continue to tell me how bad you are for me - that even though you don't have dairy, you have parts of you that studies have found are as addicting as cocaine - you're a habit I'm just not willing to break. Not yet anyway.
Faye B.'s Missed Connection With Bread & Cheese
Get Down From Your Pedestal - b4c (bread for cheese)
The first time I saw you, you were placed on a pedestal. The cheese shop owner, delicately unwrapped you and placed you in your case. I knew it was wrong, seeing you so exposed like that. Your triple creme insides were bulging against your rind, just waiting to be released. I am waiting to catch you. Waiting to have you spread all over me.
Our circumstances have changed. We used to be the Beyonce and Jay-Z of food pairings, but now we are cast aside like Britney Spears and Kevin Federline. A toxic pairing, full of inflammation and bloat.
I want people to see me for my true self, a crusty bread, made with traditional fermentation styles. And see you, made from local organic cow's milk and cave ripened. We can still be enjoyed if sourced responsibly and enjoyed in moderation!
For now, all I can do is just admire you from a far and and hope that the right person takes us both home so we can show show Peanut Butter and Jelly who the real power couple is around town (and, if we could be so lucky, have a menage a trois with Champagne!).
Elliott + Pizza Sittin In A Tree...
Yo pizza -
You used to be the only one for me. Yeah, I hit you up after drinking, seeing if you were up. But you were also the first thing I thought of on Saturday nights. And Friday nights. And all nights, really. Remember that one Valentine's day we spent together. You came in the shape of a heart. Pure magic.
I know as I get older, the calls are a little less frequent. You see me walking down the street with a green juice and apple. I know it must hurt. You watching. But just know, that stuff means nothing to me. It's just there. Just to fill me up. It's purely utilitarian. You. You are my heart.
Trust me. When I do get married. It's not going to be fancy appetizer crap, steak, and fish showing up. Nah, dogg. You'll be there. And only you. Because there is no one I'd rather be with than you.
Miko's Haiku to Dark Chocolate
Rich, smooth, like velvet
Indulge in Dark Chocolate
Melt in my mouth, Mmmmm
Tyler H.'s Ode To Bread
With a tradition as old as 30,000 years,
And hundreds of shapes and styles,
A flawless crust can reduce one to tears,
And queue up a line stretching miles.
Once mixed the presence of sugar and natural yeast,
Starts the fermentation process off rapidly.
Mouths water in anticipation of a glutinous feast,
The mysterious leavening alchemy.
Into the oven you go once fully proofed,
You rise, and rise, and RISE!
Aromas trigger memories like the madeleines of Proust
Your commercial types I truly despise
Oh BREAD, you fulfill my most primordial urge,
I refuse to bend to the latest trendy gluten purge
Nikki B.'s Juicy Letter To Cheeseburger
While I could easily see you every day, we're in more of an LDR since I know you're not great friends with my microbiome. But when we are together the few times per month, I enjoy every. single. minute. with you. You know how to change things up, depending on my mood: caramelized onions, arugula, and brie for those cold, gloomy days. Bacon, cheddar, and crispy onion strings when it's been an especially long week. Avocado always, because I've gotta get those healthy fats in, too, and sometimes just a good, greasy, melty classic. You go with the flow-and can even pack a healthy punch when you try. Either way, you always seem to make me smile, even when we're apart (and I'm stalking you on instagram, turning green with envy). They say variety is the spice of life, and you definitely manage to keep things interesting. I especially love when you bring other friends into the mix...talking about you, Fries and Sweet Potato Fries.
We may never move in together, but I'm happy to know that you've always been and always will be a part of my life. I'll never let go, Cheeseburger. I'll never let go.
Olivia K.'s Icy Hot Declaration To Ice Cream
We've been together for most of my life. I typically avoid being set up with strangers, but from the moment my parents introduced us, I knew we were meant to be.
You're there for me at my best, at my worst, or when I'm just on my couch, reading a book. One of the things I love about you is how you're such a chameleon. Hot day on the beach? You're a vanilla soft-serve cone with rainbow sprinkles. Binge watching The Bachelor? You're a bowl of Half Baked mixed with Chunky Monkey. You're sweet, chilling, and adventurous no matter where you are or what you're wearing.
I know I sometimes feign interest in someone else - creme brûlée, jelly donuts, apple pie - but those are just passing flames. They don't get me like you get me so you never need to worry. I'll always come back to you.
Kirby's Thank You Note To Eggs
Eggs, you’ve been called incredible, and while I am not usually given to hyperbole, I think that’s no exaggeration. Delicious, nutritious and budget friendly, you are perhaps nature’s perfect food.
Why do I love you so? Well, for one thing, you are supremely easygoing, fitting right in whether it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner. And your versatility truly knows no bounds. Scrambled, hard-boiled, over-easy, fried or poached…you are constantly reinventing yourself, and I love all your many forms in equal measure.
But what I really admire about you is your total lack of ego. You shine at breakfast, of course, in an omelet or Benedict or simply alongside potatoes and toast. But you also quietly and humbly hold all of my favorite baked goods together—cake’s unsung hero. How often is it that you find someone who gets along so swimmingly with all your friends?
So this is just a little note to say thank you. For always being there for me at the end of a long day, saving me from the siren call of takeout when I lack the basic will to cook. For possessing the unique ability to turn whatever is lingering in my almost-empty fridge into an actual meal. For guaranteeing that at any given moment, breakfast (or lunch, or dinner) is only mere minutes away. For these reasons, you really are truly incredible.
Lianna's Anything But Basic Token For Avocado Toast
I know I see you all the time. Most weekend mornings. The occasional weekday night cap. But I wanted to send you a quick note to tell you how much I appreciate you, adore you, and admire you. You have a reputation for being basic. But from your hearty bottom to your creamy top, I need you to know that, to me, you are basically perfect.
