Find Your Guru: Josh Martinez of NYC's Martinez Method

In Find Your Guru, we'll be introducing you to some pretty incredible men and women across the country, all here to train your unique body in whatever it is that it loves to do, as well as give you the tools to live your sexiest, most loving and creative life imagined (because, after all, that is your true nature). There's no harm in asking for a little help (especially from a guy as good lookin' as this one...) so without further ado, may we introduce you to Josh Martinez, of NYC's Martinez Method.

What’s your method, and what makes it unique?

The Martinez Method is boxing based with a little bit of kickboxing and strength training all mixed in a one hour session. The difference of the boxing, kickboxing, and strength training is that the reps change every session, every minute, and with every combination, so it's never just the same movement over and over. Even with the boxing, the punching, the kicking, the striking, and the other areas that you will work on.

I base all my workouts on what the person in front of me likes as far as their workout type, and as far as what they can do. So if they're a really intense person, I give them high intensity, high rep schemes. But everything is geared towards awareness of your body. So that way you know exactly how to push yourself when you're alone, and when you're doing something in a class because you had this experience.

 

What would you say that most people come to you to achieve?

Most people come to me to get the complete package. Boxing, strength training, a little bit of kickboxing — and we do it.

 

Which area of the body is your specialty?

Everything — full body definitely, because you're going to get everything in this session. It's all based on what you like the most. That's what I'm going to try to give you, adding everything else, the little things, that are going to make it a full balanced workout.

 

What  are some misconceptions around boxing?

That it can be boring, that it's very slow paced, and that it's not for everyone just depending on their physical shape at the time or the fact that they think they can't do it because it's a sport. I think it's for everyone, but it's just a different learning level for everyone.

 

What are three words that describe a workout with you?

Intense, Fun, and Energetic...you're gonna leave feeling better than you came in, there's no doubt about it.

What’s something that you get from boxing that you can’t get from any other workout?

The focus. Focus is one of the main things. And the variety! The variety of everything. There's different types of boxing, and I think that's where most people get confused.

How involved are you as a trainer?

I am the most involved. I text and call all the time, I see them for lunch and breakfast, I know about their dogs and their kids. I think it's just not only important, but it helps strengthen the relationship because now they're not only relying on you for advice, but it's a lifestyle thing. It's about being in someone's life so you know that you guys are going to reach the goal together.

It's kind of like giving homework and expecting someone to do it. You just have to prepare them for everything.

 

THE WALKING CLIMB: Do as many as you can until you can't go anymore...

 

If you could train one person in this world, who would it be? 

My dream client is anyone willing to push themselves for a whole hour. It motivates me more to work harder. I like to hold pads for an hour straight and sweat versus just not. I like a person who's driven, kind of like an athlete. I think girls are the best because they are more driven than guys. Mainly because they have goals, and they know exactly what they want to work on as they come through the door. They’re willing to work for it. That's what makes it even better because when I go home at the end of the day, I get to come up with new things to push you with, versus keeping you at a still line if you have no goals.
