Find Your Guru: Lauren Kleban, LEKFit

In a private studio tucked behind her gorgeous Hancock Park home, one of our favorite Los Angeles trainers inspires A-list celebrities and local fitness enthusiasts alike.  A former professional dancer, Lauren Kleban has earned a cult following for her high intensity dance cardio, trampoline, and sculpt routines.  Despite an exclusive waitlist for most classes, the energy Lauren creates in her space and the community forming amongst her students is nothing but positive and inclusive.  We sat down with the force behind LEKFit, Lauren herself, to learn more and have her show us her two signature workout moves.

 

Can you describe your method and what makes it unique?

LEKfit is a dance inspired fitness method designed to create long and lean muscles by using intervals of low impact, high intensity, fat burning cardio with muscle sculpting techniques created to strengthen and tone. My musically driven method focuses on full-body moves that emphasize strengthening smaller muscle groups while using the larger ones correctly. The LEKfit method differs from other dance inspired methods because instead of doing 50 minutes of straight cardio and then another hour of sculpt work, we combine cardio and sculpt work for one 50 minute full body workout. 

 

Tell us about your journey to LEKfit.

I've been in love with the idea that dance could be used as a method of fitness (for non-dancers) since I was a little girl watching my mom workout with Jane Fonda in our living room. As a teenager I was obsessed with Eric Nies's Hip Hop Aerobics and Carmen Electra's Fit to Strip in my twenties. My own method began in college when I worked at a female owned gym in St. Louis (my hometown) where I taught an easy-to-follow dance class and I was hooked! I LOVED working with women and teaching women to feel good about their bodies through movement. LEKfit was officially born after I had my first child (Miles, 4) and ended my career as a professional dancer. I had worked at a few fitness and dance studios and felt like something was missing; I saw a need for a more efficient and effective dance workout. 

 

We know your a huge proponent of the mini trampoline in your client-favorite BOUNCE class. What are the benefits of this equipment / workout?

Trampolines are great for low impact aerobics as they are super gentle on the joints. They also have a number of significant health benefits including the activation of the body’s lymphatic system and the strengthening of the pelvic floor. 

 

3 words that describe a workout with you?

Fun, challenging and effective. 

 

Can you share your morning and evening routines? What are the musts to waking up and falling asleep...

I typically have my first client or class at 6am or 7am so I wake up about 30 minutes prior to get ready. I start the day with warm water and lemon or room temperature water with chlorophyll. I always have a green juice or green smoothie after my first workout. I try to wrap my day by 6pm so I can have dinner with my husband and two kids then enjoy our nightly family dance party. I check my schedule for the following day, tweak my playlists and answer any lingering emails after my kids go to sleep and then I take a candle lit, bubble filled, epsom salt bath. 

 

Any life hacks for being a full time mother/entrepreneur? 

I try focus on one task at a time. And, recently started meditating for 10 minutes a day. It's so much harder than it seems but I do see a difference on the days I make time for it. 

 

And your dream trianee would be?

Michelle Obama!
